Sample question:
What are some of the characteristics of ancient Egyptian civilization? How can comprehending the rise of ancient Egypt and other Nile Valley civilizations enrich our understanding of African American history?
Good response –
According to the textbook, the area known as Egypt was the “most densely populated part of the ancient world (author’s last name, p. 4).” It was one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Egypt was a very stratified society that included rulers and peasants. Pharaohs (the rulers) claimed godlike-powers. In fact, Egyptians created massive tombs for their pharohs and temples for their gods. They also created a method of writing using heiroglyphs, or picture writing. They learned to use the Nile flooding for irrigation, which allowed for agricultural abundance for their people. Their art consisted of sculptures of all sizes and paintings on the walls of tombs and temples. They perfected embalming that mummified bodies, placing pharaohs and the wealthy in elaborate caskets with many offerings for the afterlife. Their civilization lasted for 3,000 years.
After reading the section on Egypt and other ancient African civilizations, it became clear that Africans were very active in the ancient world. The textbook states that “Owing to its location, Egypt played virtually no role in the forced migration of Africans to the Americas (Carson, p. 5).” In fact, we read later in the chapter that most enslaved Africans were taken from West and Central Africa. However, learning about Egypt and other ancient African civilizations reminds us that African history did not begin with slavery. African Americans history, therefore, did not begin with slavery.
