This week’s assignment is to write about volunteer management. Many nonprofits rely on volunteers to perform some to all of their primary work. Volunteers often carry the same risk as employees but with less oversight and control. Your essay should address the concept of volunteer management as it relates to paid employees and it must include the following components:
1. What is the overall concept of volunteer management?
2. What are some of the organizational advantages and disadvantages associated with having volunteer programs? Use specific examples from your experiences, and information from outside sources to explain whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or vice versa.
3. What are best practices for recruiting, managing performance, and retaining volunteers? How do these practices differ from managing paid employees, as outlined in the text?
4. Non-profits often serve a diverse population. How important is it for the volunteer base to reflect that diversity?
