Research Paper Instructions

This paper will look to answer a research question pertaining to a profound topic that
falls within the scope of Modern American History (1877 – 1989). You will be afforded
the freedom to choose a topic of interest to you (event, action, character, etc.), when writing about your topic, you must address the following points:

• What is your topic and the research question associated with it?
EXAMPLE topic: The Great Depression
EXAMPLE topic question: “How did the Great Depression change the role of
the federal government?”

• What is the background/summary of your topic? Address this prior to
addressing your research question. Do not assume that your readers have
prior knowledge of this information.

• How did your topic effect or influence individuals and/or society as a
whole? When addressing this, consider the various groups (races, gender,
class, etc.) that are in society. Are those effects still felt today?
• What are some of the varying perspectives that surround your topic? You
will notice that different sources provide different voices. Attempt to
connect these into your paper.

You can surely address additional points if you wish, but be sure to at least cover the
points above. For the topic you choose, you must find and use at least 3
sources from the SCCC Library. Please
note: YOU CAN NOT USE RANDOM WEBSITES! Any article you use must be from the
SCCC Library databases.
In the final paper I will be looking for references from your sources that support your
points/arguments. Please use your sources wisely.
The final paper must be 4-5 pages long and must be written in MLA format and
contain MLA citations. Papers will be graded based on the following criteria: First, there should be an
introductory paragraph where you briefly talk about the topic you picked and what you
plan to cover. Second, in the body of the paper, you should have at least a paragraph
on each of the areas listed above, for example why it occurred, where and when,
etc. In these paragraphs you should reference your sources with proper
citations. Finally, you should have a conclusion where you sum everything up.
