Below are 13 questions worth 100 total points. Answer each question in full and cite sources after each question(see directions below). Incomplete or un-cited answers will get only partial credit.
Craft coherent answers in complete sentences, in your own words, in the required length that address ALL parts of the question in an intelligent and logical format. Non-sentence fragmented answers will get zero points.
Avoid using direct quotes. If you must use a direct quote, use quotation marks and cite author, year, and page numbers in parentheses, i.e. (Bell 2013:39). It is more important to demonstrate that you understand the material in your ownwords. Answers that are comprised of too many direct quotes will get a low grade. Obviously, papers that are identical to classmates’ will result in a failing grade for all parties. Review the rules about plagiarism in your syllabus to avoid negative consequences. These open book paper are designed to be a reflection of your own work and level of understanding, no one else’s.
Finally, start working on this paper early. Write and proofread drafts of each answer before you submit the final document for a grade. Papers that are written and submitted at the last minute are generally poorly researched and written, risk late night technical snafus, and usually get a low grade.

Who are the Nacirema? What beliefs and practices of the Nacirema did you find the most strange or bizarre? Describe and be specific. From Wednesday, September 22. Subcultures and Countercultures
11. Short essay. 10 points. Answer all parts of the following question in one or two complete and cohesive paragraphs.
Who are the Deadheads? What are the shared symbols, language, beliefs, values, and norms that comprise Deadhead subculture? Define each term and provide at least one example from Deadhead subculture for each building block of culture. Your job in this question is to demonstrate that you truly understand the difference between each of these building blocks of culture. You will have to really watch and listen closely for the one specific example about language in the film. (Hint: it has to do with naming). And you will have to rely on the PowerPoint slide for this lesson for a sociological definition of beliefs. Are Deadheads also part of a counterculture? Explain what is unique about countercultures in general, and what, if anything, about Deadhead subculture might also be considered countercultural.
From Friday, September 24. The Culture of Consumerism
12. Short essay. 10 points. Answer all parts of the following question in one or two complete and cohesive paragraphs.
When it comes to spending for things, whom does Schor say Americans used to compare themselves to in the 1950s and 60s? What category later became the new reference group for a majority of Americans in the 1990s? What social forces does Schor say propelled this “new consumerism”? Why does she see this as problematic for society? Explain and give at least two specific examples from the assigned materials. Do you think Schor’s critique is relevant today? Why or why not? Explain.

What is “downshifting” according to Schor (see chapter, transcript, and film)? Why does she recommend it? What does it entail and what effects does it have on individuals and society? How does the activity of downshifting contrast with some of the core American values listed in your textbook and PowerPoint slide? What different values is downshifting based upon and how does Schor see it helping society and the environment? Explain and give examples. Would you ever consider downshifting your life and goals? Why or why not? Explain.
