What are the current debates regarding the meaning of the word?

Directions: This chapter has covered the evolution of the English language from Old English to modern day usage. As illustrated, Old English and Middle English show little resemblance to the language we use today. It is essential to keep in mind that the language we use today is continuing to develop and evolve based on social changes and usage. The evolution of vocabulary is not always seamless or without controversy.

A contemporary example of a controversial term is the word “marriage.” Consider the social debate that centers on how this term is defined. What the term means, who it includes, and the benefits associated with “marriage” are aspects of its definition that are causing serious debate.

For this project, you will choose a term that is under debate or has significant historical meaning, and you will research its history. Additional examples are: bullying, freedom, security, democracy, privacy, politics, and liberty.

Choose a term that interests you and research its meaning. A word origin dictionary is a good start; be sure to review multiple sources of definitions. Research some additional current events or topics that are examples of how the term can be defined in various ways. Consider the following questions as you research:
What is the oldest usage you can find?
How many definitions are easily available?
Do the definitions seem to be in agreement?
What are the current debates regarding the meaning of the word?
What does your research suggest about how language develops meaning over time?
Once you have done your research, complete the following project:
After you have researched and found the information you need, use the Presentation tool to create a presentation about the history of the term, changes it has undergone, and what it means today. Include images, audio, video, and links to outside resources when possible.
