An individual’s health is determined by several factors, including their behaviors, social environments, and physical environments. This week’s readings focused on several of these factors using the eco-social perspective. More specifically, we have learned about the social determinants of health, defined by the CDC as the “conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.”
This week you will write a 500 word essay to explore the social determinants of health as it relates to a specific health topic and population. To begin, identify a disease or condition and choose a specific population for your focus. For this week’s essay you will answer the following questions:
What are the behavioral risk factors of this disease/condition? What are the larger social and environmental (eco-social) factors associated with these behaviors and the disease/condition?
Writing tips:
Be sure to use a standard essay format.
Identify a disease or condition of public health interest (ex: obesity, COVID, type 2 diabetes, suicide, substance use, HIV).
Choose a specific population impacted by this disease/condition. This should be determined by the literature you find on the topic. (ex: youth, LGBTQIA+, populations 65+, low-income Americans, rural populations, urban populations, racial/ethnic populations, etc.).
Determine what behavioral factors impact this disease/condition, then identify and explain why using the eco-social framework. Example: Factors that impact obesity may include poor nutrition and lack of exercise (behaviors). These behaviors could be associated with lack of access to fresh food, economic factors, or unsafe living conditions (eco-social factors).
Remember to use “people-first” language (ex: person living with diabetes vs. diabetic person)
Your essay should be double-spaced using a 12 point font and approximately 500 words (2 pages). References do not count within this word limit and must be formatted in AMA style. It is not necessary to include a title page or abstract for a short essay.
References must be in APA format. Atleast 2-3 references.
