Reading summaries should consist of two or three paragraphs and should include responses to the
following questions:
1. What are the main issues the author addresses in the reading? What are the main point(s) the
author argues?
2. What kinds of evidence does the author use to support the argument?
3. What are the key terms or concepts the author uses to describe the issues, and how are these
terms defined? You may list these with the definition the author gives, or if there is no
definition, look it up.
4. Did you agree with the author’s point of view? Did you find the argument and the evidence
convincing?
Important: Summaries and rebuttals should include references to the pages from the texts in question.
Remember, part of the purpose of the summaries is making these readings more accessible to your
peers.
