General comments
You must refer explicitly to the readings or video, using direct quotes and paraphrases, and include details. When quoting
something from the course material or from a video, you may offer a simplified citation, e.g., by putting
the source in parentheses, or simply note the source in the text, e.g., by writing something like “According
to . . .”
You should be able to write a solid essay using only the course readings, but you may, if you wish,
use other sources. If you do use other sources, you must offer a full citation in a foot- or endnote, or at the
end of the paper. Since these are short papers, don’t bother with introductions or conclusions: if you answer the
questions in order, that will be sufficient to provide both intro and conclusion. Pick either 1 or 2 and complete the analysis of the three general-theory approaches
(consequentialism, deontological ethics, natural law).

ii. How does one apply the approach, that is, in order to judge the ethical content of an act or
practice using this approach, what do you need to look at or consider? (Use of examples may be helpful.)
iii. What are the benefits to using this approach?
iv. What are the drawbacks to using this approach?
v. Briefly note your own assessment of the approach.
You may write this as one continuous essay of 4-6 double-spaced pages, or break it into three separate essays of 1-2
double-spaced pages each.
2. Compare and contrast two of the three general-theory approaches along the following lines:
i. What are the main strengths (theoretical and/or practical) of these approaches?
ii. What are the main weaknesses (theoretical and/or practical) of these approaches?
iii. In what way(s), if any, are these two approaches compatible? If so, how would you combine
them? (Use of examples may be helpful.)
iv. In what way(s), if any, are these two approaches incompatible? If so, how could they be used to
reach different conclusions? (Use of examples may be helpful.)
v. Which of these approaches are you more likely to use, and why? Or would you combine them?
