1. In your own words, explain semiotics briefly.
2. The American flag is an important symbol that can be interpreted differently. In fact, that is part of the tension in American culture today stemming from former 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s on-field protests (Links to an external site.) from a few years ago. What are two different connotations of the American flag that reflect this tension? (This answer is not given in the video. I am asking you to figure it out based on understanding semiotics. Also, keep in mind that I am not looking for your stance on any social issue or the flag with this question; I am looking for you to articulate what those connotative meanings of the flag are from different perspectives of different people. Keep in mind also that as we go through the semester, you don’t have to be performative in discussing your social/political views for my sake.
