Essentially, I want the essay to flow like a story. It should address the following questions:
• Inspiring: WHY is this your long-term vision? What impact are you hoping to have and/or what problem are you aiming to solve? How does this vision either help others, improve your industry, or tie into some hot new growth trend?
• Realistic: How does this vision logically stem from your professional background? Do you have DIRECT experience in this field yet?
• Unique to you: How/when did your interest in this field develop? Is there at least one personal aspect of your background that can be added, as an extra ingredient? (We will use this later to develop your “Career Vision Hook” that you’ll use in your essays!)
• What skills/experience are you currently lacking that prevent you from pursuing your long-term goal now?
My story is the following:
I’ve been working as an Economic Consulting analyst at Compass Lexecon within the securities and finance practice for the last two years . The past six months, I’ve shifted into a more senior role, overlooking junior analysts’ work and getting more involved in the bigger picture casework. I’ve worked on several, high-profile cases, one of which obtained the first successful post-COVID-19 judicial ruling for a buyer in an M&A case.
Outside of work, I work for a non-profit called Maya’s Hope Organization doing strategy analysis, and am a Board Member for Columbia Young Alumni Association.
Post-MBA, I want to shift into a leadership role in corporate strategy post-MBA. My current job requires me to use a backwards-looking perspective on companies’ strategies, using historical market data to conduct my own analysis on projected value of certain projects, mergers, etc. The area that I want to shift into post-MBA employs a more forward-looking perspective. Instead of analyzing past strategies, you’re now at the forefront of creating the vision and executing those strategies. My long-term goal is to shift into corporate strategy, specifically corporate strategy entrepreneurship (CES), which is looking at new business lines or new products as a potential for growth.
