1.Metals: What are your thoughts on metals and their use in our society? As usual these minerals fall into the category of being taken for granted within our modern consumer society without any thoughts about their origins or the often large externalized costs that surround their extraction from the ground. What types of metals are you surrounded by in your daily life? Where do they come from? Are they potentially causing any harm (toxicology) to your body? Make an attempt to list the metals that surround you in your daily life? What kind of metal items do you use on a daily basis? However, try to focus specifically on the environmental costs associated with these items? Research mining practices and their externalized costs.
Choose a mining site and/or a metal and bring it to the forum

2. Green Design & The Cities of the Future: What will the cities of the future look like? More and more people live in cities – a trend that was enhanced during the 20th century. It is an incredible feat logistically and from a resource perspective to gather so many people in one place. have you ever considered the incredible logistic behind a large city? Today there are numerous large megapolises across the world many of which are showcased in the media section of this week’s module. There are even some environmentalists that are suggesting that we may need to be in cities to protect ourselves from the mayhem that may be the consequences of the climate crisis. For example, the wildfires in the west makes it more difficult to live in rural areas. It is easier to protect specific regions with high population density. In addition, it is likely that you have come across the concept of Green Design over the last few years. More and more buildings incorporate elements linked to increasing its sustainability. Do you have any Green Design in your own house? In the neighborhood? Look around and report back here in the forum. Are there any Green Design elements that you have considered to incorporate into your home? What are they and why do you want them? Finally, have you ever had any dream of building your own home? Would that be a “green home” or is it more of a fantasy house? Do you think we can transform California with the help of Green Design over the next century? Our nation? The world? Use the materials to envision the cities of the future. Are we moving towards sustainable cities or are cities literally cancer growths on the Earth’s surface? How can we build the cities of the future to make them sustainable? Bring forward examples of Green Design and/or future cities (embed images – use the insert image function in the tool bar).
