What are your thoughts on the expanded version of the ACA – Affordable Care Act – that President Joe Biden wants to implement? Do you agree or disagree with additional subsidies for working class Americans? Do you agree that there should be a “public option” for healthcare in the United States?
I believe there needs to be an expansion of the Affordable Care Act to make it more readily available to people who need it. I agree with President Biden that the ACA needs to include families who make more than 400% of the poverty line. People need a fair chance at affordable healthcare to relinquish the worry of detrimental out of pocket expenses. A public option that is available in the United States seems like a logical next step to getting affordable health insurance to everyone. The only concern I have with the expansion illustrated in the article is how it will effect healthcare organizations. The article describes a federal healthcare option has more leverage than a private insurer to drive down prices of doctor visits and hospital care. While I would wholeheartedly love for medical care to be cheaper and less ludicrously priced, I fear it could have a negative effect on the quality of care throughout the country. If the price of visits and care is driven down by the government, that means healthcare organizations are making significantly less money; money that can be used to stay at the cutting edge of technology and pay staff. If the government were to drive down prices for patients but at the same time subsidize the organization it could balance out, but to me this appears to be an extremely complex issue.
