Should we also be thinking about the use of tobacco/nicotine addiction? In terms of substance abuse prevention, tobacco is tricky, because the negative consequences can take years to occur, and tobacco use does not impair functioning to the same extent as other drug use, like alcohol or illicit substances. Do you think that from an educational perspective, government prevention initiatives see this substance as less of a critical issue than other drugs?

I also think that we will also be in clinical situations where our perspectives, attitudes, and experiences differ greatly from our client(s). This includes working with diverse populations. I find it useful to begin by asking the client about these factors, and acknowledging differences when they become apparent can help build a solid therapeutic relationship. Thoughts about this?
