Since 9/11 popular culture and mainstream media in USA has often Portrayed Middle Eastern people as naturally predisposed to authoritarian rule and incapable of democratic government. Use the case study of 1958 Iraqi Revolution to challenge this historical assessment by historicizing the events that brought Qasim regime to power and then analyzing the local, regional, and global conditions that produced its violent demise. Why was the Hashemite monarchy so despised, and by whom? What concrete steps did Qasim take to create a more equitable and inclusive polity in Iraq. To what extent did he succeed or fail, and why? What external factors and/or actors worked to prevent his success?
