For this essay, your thesis will include 2-3 literary devices, such as imagery, figures of speech, symbolism, alliteration, assonance, diction, etc. along with a theme. The rest of your thesis will comprise how literary devices develop the theme.
Here is an example:
Very Specific
Through the use of strong diction and figures of speech, Dickinson is able to clearly illustrate the theme of death and the process of making peace with a loss.
Too Broad; No Argument
The main idea in this poem is that death is simply a physical stage that we all have to go through at one point in our lives.
Organization of essay:
I. Introduction paragraph with a thesis statement at the end (1 par.)
II. Biography paragraph (1 par.): Include two quotes from the biographical article
III. Explicate the poem and use definitions (about one paragraph per stanza): Include three definitions and one quote from the additional academic article. Go line by line through the poem. For example, if you have a poem that is 14 lines, you might break up the paragraphs as follows:

BP 1 Lines 1-4
BP 2 Lines 5-8
Etc.
IV. Conclusion (1 par.)
*Use an alphanumeric outline format (Links to an external site.) and include quotes from your research along with the words you will define.

Review the topic sheet for how to write and thesis statement and how to organize the essay for your outline. Remember that this is an explication and you will analyze the poem line by line and in that order. You will NOT devote each paragraph to a different literary device but cycle through them as needed while writing your essay. Focus on two specific literary devices overall along with the theme.
Instructions: Upload your outline. Then, comment on TWO of your peers’ outlines: Does it address the assigned topic? Is the thesis arguable and clearly written? Is the organization effective? What could be added to further develop the points provided? Provide two specific recommendations for what to improve. Each response should be written in at least one carefully worded and edited paragraph.

Note: I strongly suggest uploading your outline at least a day in advance of the deadline. By waiting until the last minute, you may not get a review at all. When you enter the discussion, if someone already has a review, move on to someone else.
Tips for Writing the Thesis Statement
Thesis Statement: The main idea or central argument of an essay. A thesis should demonstrate clear word choice, it should be manageable for the page length, it should be interesting, and it should be arguable (evidence can be found to prove it). Place at as the last sentence of the introduction and underline it.
Thesis Tip: You need to answer the following questions in the thesis: Why? How so? This can be done by adding “because” to the end of the thesis statement which completes the argument. Your thesis should include the main idea + your reasoning.
State your claim about the work and add the points that you plan to use and discuss in your essay, such as the theme. What are the aspects of the work that you discussed in your essay? How does your analysis of these aspects support the claim you made about the work? Review your outline to determine the points you will add to complete your thesis statement.
