What could improve the punishment experience and ensure that the punishment is an effective tool in addressing criminal behaviour?

This is a type of report about Prisons being a punishment. The assessment for this module is a project based upon a particular exploration and understanding of a type of punishment.
The project involves the critical assessment of a punishment, treatment, or rehabilitation type. You will need to identify your type of punishment and critically discuss its role within the wider criminal justice system. You will also need to critically consider the impact of the punishment experience on the individual(s) involved.
Projects need to use appropriate academic literature and must critically evaluate:
• the chosen type of punishment, treatment, or rehabilitation, its role in the criminal justice system,
• the perpetrator experience of this particular type of punishment or institution(s). Using biography, HM Inspector of Prisons reports, Prisons Ombudsman Reports, and other relevant resources
• prisoner/perpetrator adaptation to institutions or type of punishment – how do people change and adapt in order to survive particularly within the prison environment
• how can we justify the use of punishment?
• what the type of punishment does to attempt to address the offending behaviour of the perpetrator during the sentence and how successful/unsuccessful is this
• how does your punishment type ensure accountability?
• what could improve the punishment experience and ensure that the punishment is an effective tool in addressing criminal behaviour?
• Do we know how the public view this type of punishment?
In addition to these 8 elements, which may be used as the structure for the project (i.e. as separate headings), you are free to address any issues that you feel are important to the understanding of the perpetrator experience, in particular the type of punishment or institution (if you are focusing on prison), its successes and failures, and the experiences of people who are subjected to the punishment. Please remember that the project should not rely on description alone but has to incorporate a significant element of critical analysis that is supported by academic literature and other sources relevant to our understanding of how effective this type of punishment is, how perpetrators experience such punishment and how successful the responses are in addressing the myriad of issues that offenders face. Work must be appropriately referenced according to the Harvard system.
As this assessment is a project you can include pictures, graphs, and any other materials that you feel will enhance your work. The Inspectorate reports from the Chief Inspector of Prisons will provide information on all the prisons of England and Wales and give you information on how prisoners experience being in such institutions. The Prison Service website is another useful guide, as is the Howard League for Penal Reform, The Prison Reform Trust, The Youth Justice Board, Prisons and Probation Ombudsman also provide a huge amount of useful information. Prisoner/offender biography is a vital part of this assessment
