My short example – being aware of my gender identity (man).
As a man I am generally expected by others to eat more (which can be a privilege to have access to more food). Recently, I stopped eating a lot of breads and big meals in order to help maintain my health. I met with a group of male friends at IHOP and ordered just a fruit cup because I didn’t want to eat a lot, eat carbs, and I planned to work out at the gym later that morning. My male friends looked at me as if they were disappointed (“really man, that all you are eating?”) as if I wasn’t really joining them. I initially thought “maybe I’m not being in the “Man Club” because I’m not order a big meal. They were talking about how much food they were going to “smash on”. As a man (dominant identity) I am expected to have more access to food, and be strong. Perhaps my behavior around eating food was out of the norm for a man. Perhaps eating less was associated with femininity (subordinated) – watching my figure, eating less, not being as strong or big. Thus, could eating less symbolize me, as a man, not really being powerful and privileged?
