What do students need to consider when choosing their college?

Have you picked your college? What do students need to consider when choosing their college? Robin Wilson’s article titled Ad Urges Students to Think Twice About Colleges with a Rape Problem indicates that some colleges have a higher rate of rape than other colleges. According to Wilson, potential students should check out the ads before choosing a college. However, most of the article was about a group called UltraViolet’s campaign against rape on college campuses. Therefore, the title of the article is misleading. Most of the article is about one college, Dartmouth, and is more of bashing of this college.
In the first paragraph, the readers find that the article appears in The Chronicle of Higher Education on May 15, 2014. The article appeared after UltraViolet intensified its campaign against rape on college campuses. With the article appearing in a professional journal, the author is validating the importance of the article.
The second paragraph of Wilson’s article is one of the weakest paragraphs within the article. This paragraph simply states that a father of a potential student spoke to a junior on campus about the uniqueness of the rape problem at Dartmouth. There is no indication of why this student was chosen or what the student revealed about the problem. Seeking one student’s opinion tells the father nothing about Dartmouth’s rape problem and adds nothing to the article.
Finally, by the third paragraph, readers find out that Dartmouth was a primary target in a hard-hitting new advertisement campaign by UltraViolet. Within this paragraph, the true thesis of the article is revealed. By the end of the paragraph, one learns that ads are appearing to defer students from attending Dartmouth. “Accepted to Dartmouth? Reads one of the ads that appeared last month on Facebook and other websites, drawing more than 200,000 views” stated Wilson.
What is a real thesis Wilson is writing the article about? She would like the reader to think that UltraViolet has discovered that some colleges have a higher rape problem. However, the main thesis should be that the rape problem is so severe at Dartmouth that students should think twice before attending college at Dartmouth. In the fifth paragraph, “Roland (director of UltraViolet) is quoted saying that the goal is to inform students considering these colleges know what they are getting into.” The only college truly exposed is Dartmouth. Roland also said that it was to make sure the administration can’t hide the problem. This paragraph should have come earlier in the paper. As Wilson introduced her readers to UltraViolet, she should have explained the goals of the organization.
