About Using Literary Criticism
In the poem, both Laura and Lizzie (and,
according to the text, all “maidens”) are
tempted to “come buy” fruit from this
grotesque band of goblins. The descriptions
of the fruits themselves should give you some
inkling, on the surface, they would be
tempted! One look at the goblins, however,
would make you think that no one would want
anything to do with them. And yet, all women
are tempted. What gives?
This poem is an extremely famous one, one
that, generation after generation, a terrific
number of literary critics have sought to
interpret. At the heart of that desire, surely, is
the poem’s evocative descriptions and its
fantastical elements—including the means by
which Lizzie saves Laura. As a new(er) reader
to this poem, it’s important both to have your
own reaction, but then to study and learn
about the history, religion, philosophy and
politics that went into the poem’s writing.
