Today we read about the difficult task of reuniting the country following the end of the Civil War. The rise of the Ku Klux Klan made it difficult for newly freed African Americans to obtain civil and political rights. As African Americans in the South sought to gain these freedoms, they were met with violent resistance from whites who wanted to maintain white supremacy in the South.
