What do the titles of these four stories mean “A Story of an Hour,” “Popular Mechanics,” “The Story of the Body,” and “The Parable of the Prodigal Son”? What do you think would be a better or alternate title of the story?

What do the titles of these four stories mean “A Story of an Hour,” “Popular Mechanics,” “The Story of the Body,” and “The Parable of the Prodigal Son”? What do you think would be a better or alternate title of the story? How does the title reflect on the deeper meaning and message of the story? It is okay to get somewhat off-topic as long as the discussion remains connected in some way to to the story.

Popular Mechanics” was the story that stuck out to me the most in terms of having a very odd title. In the short story, nothing very popular, or mechanical in conventional terms was talked about or even around the main characters of the story. But then I thought there might be a lot of symbolism in this story, and that the title might be reflective of what the symbol is. Maybe the title is more referring to the mechanics or really the dynamics of a family that is clearly going through a rough-patch in their relationship. Popular might be used more sarcastically, meaning that these sorts of family issues are more prevalent than many people would like to think. I would keep the title; it is very vague and it keeps me guessing!

The young person from the story goes on a journey, which leads to the transition of being reborn as a different person. The title is written as if the protagonist is a spendthrift person and never learned through the mistakes he made in his all life. However, this story title emphasizes that the protagonist makes a mistake in his lifetime. The title suggests that he is a troublemaker rather than a son who started understanding reality. The title could come from an objective or inclusive viewpoint. The words “prodigal son” shows how he lives an extravagant and dissipated life, which could grab the readers’ attention. Making mistakes during our youth is something we may encounter at some point in our lives, and they are a part of life- not a failure but part of a journey; the maturing process through the long journey could be a life lesson to him and form family bonds between father and son. A more appropriate title should be “ A Long Journey of the Youth.” The readers should not brand the young man’s misstep as a sign of defeat without reading the whole story because making a mistake could be the way to turn over a new leaf.
