Product recall – A manufacturer of baby foods has discovered that an egg noodle junior dinner contains bacteria that causes diarrhea and vomiting. The products are manufactured in Pittsburgh, PA.

Home banking – This multi-state bank has completed a test market in suburban New York and is ready for a national rollout. Customers use a specially encoded app to transfer funds, pay bills, check balances, and more, right from their smart phone.

In-line skating competition – An Olympic-style competition is being planned to call attention to this emerging sport. In-line skate manufacturers are eager to sign up high-flying daredevils willing to leave their skateboards behind and try a new sport. Competitors are now being recruited for a fall event in Mineola, NY, where in-line skating was born.

Message (encoded) – what words, symbols, appeals, ideas, beliefs will the sender use to establish common ground with the receiver?
Gatekeeper – who, if anyone, controls the delivery of the message?
Channel – how is the message delivered?
Message (decoded) – what words, symbols, appeals, ideas or beliefs are receivers needing to correctly interpret the message?
Receiver – who is the audience for the communication? What do they have in common? How are they unique?
Feedback – what would the sender want to know from the receiver? How would the sender get that feedback?
