For this discussion assignment you will inspect aerial images and watch a video about an earthquake and answer questions that follow (Parts 1 and 2, below).
You will need to first post your answers (replies) to questions (Q1 & Q2) given in Part 1. After submitting your replies to Part 1 questions, you will be able to see what your classmates have written. At this stage you will interact with at least two students and comment on their posts as part of your answer to Part 2.
This discussion is not timed, that is, you may open and work on it as long as the due date/time has not passed.
Make sure you follow these instructions when you post your replies to Part 1 (Q1 & 2).
Regarding questions Q1 and Q2: respond to each question individually and in numerical order, always identifying the question number you are answering. You can’t answer both questions in one paragraph in the form of an essay.
You must post your answers to Q1 & Q2 of Part 1 all at the same time. That is, you can’t post your answers for Q1 and Q2 at different times. I suggest that you first answer all questions, save them to your desktop, review each answer for accuracy, and finally post them to the discussion in one piece.

Part 1 – Questions (15 points)
There are two questions in this part. Q1 pertains to an earthquake that happened in 2015 in Nepal, while Q2 is about the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake in California. Follow instructions for each question.
Q1. Regarding the 2015 Nepal earthquake (Video 1):
First, open the US government’s official earthquake site Ready.Gov to read scientific guidance on what to do (or not do) before, during, and after an earthquake. After reading the earthquake guidance, watch the earthquake footages from Nepal (Video 1) and answer the following two questions.
i) describe TWO scenarios where people acted correctly according to the earthquake guidance recommended in Ready.Gov. Write each scenario in a separate paragraph. For each scenario, write the time stamp when the action happened in the video. [2 points for each scenario, 0.5 point each for writing the time stamp for each scenario; Total: 5 points]
ii) It appears from the video footage that many people didn’t have the necessary knowledge or awareness about what to do/not do during and after the earthquakes. If you were the President of Nepal, what would you implement to make sure that people are minimally impacted by the earthquakes? Give your opinion on the best course of action to make people safer. [3 points]
Q2. Regarding the 2019 Ridgecrest Earthquake (Video 2 and Aerial Images 1 and 2):
First get an idea of the nature of the 2019 Ridgecrest Earthquake by watching at least the first 4 minutes of the ABC news coverage (Video 2). In addition, carefully examine the two pictures given below (Aerial Images 1 and 2) that were taken immediately after the earthquake hit the city of Ridgecrest. Then answer the following two questions.
iii) What do you understand by the terms foreshock, main shock, and after shock? Write your answers for each term in a separate paragraph and include examples for each from the video. [3 points]
iv) What kind of fault did the Ridgecrest earthquake produce: normal, reverse, or strike-slip? Select one and explain your answer. [4 points]
