In this reading packet, you will see documents from a wide range of sources, including the American Anti-Imperialism League, Alfred Thayer Mahans The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, and Albert J. Beveridges In Support of an American Empire. These documents reveal many of the impulses behind the creation of an American empire.
Remember, you need to answer at least two of the following questions, and then reply to at least three of your classmates responses. For more information, revisit the “Discussion Instructions” module.
Here are the questions:
The American Anti-Imperialist League called the war in the Philippines a “war against liberty” and further said that it was “disloyalty to the distinctive principles of our Government.” Are these characterization accurate? Why or why not?
How did Queen Liliuokalani characterize America’s hostile takeover of Hawaii? What does she accuse the Americans of doing, and why does she ultimately decide to abdicate the throne?
Examine Alfred Thayer Mahan and Albert J. Beveridge’s statements. How are their views similar? How are their views different? Why do both men support the creation of an American empire.
Emilio Aguinaldo argues that, by violently creating an empire, the United States has “abandoned her traditions and set up a double standard of government.” Why does Aguinaldo hold this view? How would someone like Beveridge respond to such an accusation?
