Attached is the reading material that needs to be written about, below are the assignment instructions.
Please read the attached sociological article from Dale Spencer (2014) on sensory ethnography and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting. As you read this, make sure that you’re “reading with a purpose.” In other words, you should be strategically reading this article to look for certain things.
Interestingly, this article is quite micro-sociological in character. Sociological analysis tends to lie between what is often referred to as macro-sociology and micro-sociology. Of course, there’s also a meso-level between these extremes. Macro-sociology is typically concerned with analyzing social dynamics across a broader purview of society. For instance, a sociologist working from a more macro-perspective may be interested in analyzing gender norms throughout society or immigration reform policy or how the education system creates systemic racial barriers. Micro-sociology, on the other hand, is typically concerned with analyzing local interactional contexts. For example, a sociologist working from a more micro-perspective may be interested in analyzing why people are reluctant to make eye contact in an elevator or how power is negotiated among co-workers in a warehouse. Sociologists working from a micro-perspective tend to use research methods that focus on face-to-face encounters and interactions between individuals within a societal context (Conley 2015). As you read this journal article, take notes about why it would be considered more micro-sociological than macro-sociological.
Additionally, do your best at writing down the reference for this article in whichever format you’re comfortable with (ASA, APA, MLA, etc.). Soon we will cover American Sociological Association (ASA) citation style. In addition to writing down the reference for this article, you should be looking for and taking notes on the following as you read:
What is the article about? What is the implicit research question that this sociologist is addressing?
What methods did Spencer (2014) use to address this research question?
What are his main findings?
What are some details (quotations) you can share about his main findings?
What does the article do well? How might you critique this article? In other words, what are some issues or questions you feel this article should have addressed or addressed in greater detail that it did not?
