In this assignment, you will choose a U.S. law or laws from Chapter 7 in the text Race Class, Gender and Identity in the U.S. and discuss how this law was designed to maintain privilege.
You will examine the following questions:
how has this law impacted our society from then to now?
how has this law influenced how we treat or see the marginalized group?
In what ways did the law limit marginalized group from access to power?
What does the law reveal about the operations of racism, sexism, and heterosexism?
Why was this law created?
This assignment will require: 1) summary of the U.S. law, including its historical, social, and political context, 2) a critical analysis of its impact on our society which should examine the short term and long term effects.
Your assignment must contain the following:
Two quotation sandwiches
Two paraphrase sandwiches
Clear, concise, and tight thesis statement that clearly sets out your paper’s position and logical reasons for your argument in your introduction
Topic sentences that foreshadow what the rest of the paragraph is discussing or examining
Suitable and appropriate transitions

Analysis of research, not just spouting information, but an evaluation of your research materials
A convincing conclusion that supports your aforementioned thesis statement
Supporting details—evidence supporting your thesis statement like statistics, research studies, interviews, facts, articles etc.
Your assignment should not include:
Statements like “I believe” or “In my opinion”, or “I think that, “To me,” or “I feel that”
Replace those statement with ones like “some believe” or “One could assume”, or “It has been argued that”
Avoid statements like “everyone knows that”
Generalizations—statements that are not supported by credible evidence.
Personal anecdotes or experiences
Avoid statements like “opponents” of gay marriage, replace with “supporters” of gay marriage.
