Passage 1: The author of this document, Tacitus, was a part of the Roman conquest of Britain under the command of Agricola, who was his father in law. He wasn’t a Briton, though, and therefore probably did not hear the speech which Galgacus made to his troops. This passage doesn’t tell you much at all about how the British people felt about the Romans and their attempted conquest, but it can tell you about how Romans felt about those same conquests. After reading this passage, what can you say that Tacitus thought about Roman imperialism? Back up your argument with points from the text.
Passage 2: What does the story of Eric the Red tell you about the Vikings’ motivation for exploration? Viking culture didn’t have the same gender norms that were common in more modern European societies, so what role did women play in their expansion and conquest?
Passage 3: Our cultural memory of the Crusades is basically that they’re bad, and that they make the Catholic Church look bad. This is because the Crusades are the only wars in Western history declared by the Church, so you could argue that the Church ‘started it’. What does this document tell you about why the Crusades are remembered as such a bad thing? Keeping in mind that the author of this document was French (a Frank), what kind of spin do you think he’s trying to put on this story?
