Psychological Disorders Film Analysis
Movies about psychological disorders can be extremely fascinating (and may earn a great deal of revenue because of that) and possibly even win an Oscar. This is often at the cost of society’s understanding of psychological disorders because they aren’t always the best at portraying mental illness accurately. The goal of this project is to help you discern between Hollywood’s version and what the DSM-5 says about the psychological disorder.
View a film (use attached list) that depicts a major psychological disorder. Using the accompanying copy of the DSM-5 as your primary source, write a paper that fully reflects upon the following information (please include the headings in your paper). Please also include a work cited page for the film and resources you used for the paper.
-Synopsis
Give an overview of the film in your own words. It should be detailed enough that a person who has not viewed the movie will understand the film based on your explanation
-Overview
Give an overview of the disorder based on the specifications within the DSM-5 and other reputable sources
-Symptoms
What examples (and explanations if needed) of the symptoms are demonstrated by your character that match the diagnosis you made from the DSM-5? Does the movie accurately and/or inaccurately portray the disorder according to the DSM-5? If there was inaccuracy, how could the movie have better portrayed the disorder?
-Treatment
What treatment was used for your character? Is this accurate to what might be used to treat the disorder today? If there are more updated/better treatments available, list and explain those as well. If no treatment was given, explain how it should/could be treated. Can you connect any treatment back to one or more of the perspectives?
-Reflection
Does the film’s message reduce the stigma of mental illness and seeking treatment for mental health needs or only contribute to it? How is it of benefit and/or detriment to society’s education about psychological disorders?
