What general and specific forces set these events and movement in motion?

1) What makes these movements similar or different?
2) How did each of these movements use social media
to advance their cause?
3) What are the political and cultural contexts of
each movement?
4) What general and specific forces set these events
and movement in motion?
5) Finally, look back at the ideas and perspectives
we covered in the Brief Overview of Social Movement Theory, Social Movements
Case Studies, and the various articles and videos we read. What do they tell us
about the current and future state of resistance?
6) Use parallels from Brief Overview of Social
Movement Theory and Social Movements Case Studies to analytically observe how
these movements are similar/different to some of the historical movements
covered in those readings.

As
you can see, I’m not asking you to simply report facts on a few social movements. I’m asking you report, evaluate, most
importantly analyze a few social movements and really understand who were the
dominant players, why they felt a sense of oppression, explain their
strategies, what they achieved or didn’t achieve, and to compare and contrast
these things in addition to reporting on how they are similar and/or different.
I am also requiring that you make
analytical connections to previous/other movements as reported in the first two
readings of this class (pdf’s available on Canvas) and other movements
discussed in both the Castells text and Tufecki text. You should pull from the course texts,
articles from the class as necessary, library research and most of all,
*credible* internet resources. You should have no less than 5 sources, but many
students will use more than that to accomplish their purpose. NOTE: Please
do not give me an overview of each movement, as I’m well aware of what happened
in each and a summary will simply take up valuable analysis space. This paper is designed to showcase your
understanding of the movements, their intricacies and how they relate to the
subtopics requested above.

Organization
You
should organize your paper into the following three parts as listed below, but
most importantly, have COHESIVE ORGANIZATION throughout your paper. Please do not jump around from movement to
movement without clear organization (it is easy to get lost in this paper, so
make sure to organize clearly).

I.
Introduction: Provide a brief description of the social movements
you have chosen and include a brief preview of all major sections of your
paper.

II.
Body: Discuss in detail the main points
corresponding to the various topics included under the Content section. The body is by far the longest part of the
paper and should explicitly address all of the sections required above. It is important that you give direct quotes
and paraphrases from your research, as well as direct quotes (and source
citations) from the course textbooks to ensure application of theoretical principles
to this project.

III.
Conclusion: Provide a brief summary of the body of the
paper, including a review of all main ideas covered.

Requirements
The
paper must be typed (double spaced) and must display acceptable college level
standards of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph structure,
spelling, etc. Please use 12 point font
and one inch margins on all sides (standard in Word). Use only Arial, Verdana, or Trebuchet
font. Length: 1,750-2,000 words.

Submission: Email your finished paper to me as an
attached file in .doc, .docx, .rtf or .pdf format. Label your file with your
last name and the assignment, as with CarolPerez_ResearchSocialMovement.doc
