Short Essay Questions (4 short essays worth 20 pts. each; 80% of total score).
Choose four of the following questions to answer in a well-developed
paragraph (try and limit your word length to a single healthy paragraph). Please include
the corresponding letter of the question you choose with your answer. Then submit your answers to the
dropbox in this module:
A) Differentiate between the four spatial (proxemic) distances (with their suggested
lengths), giving a specific example of how each can be used appropriately to
communicate effectively. (135-36)
B) Define self-disclosure and contrast the rewards and dangers involved. (180-84)
C) What general stages do relationships follow? Give an example of the kind of
communication that takes place at each stage. (198-204)
D) For each of the five steps in listening (receiving, understanding, remembering, evaluating,
responding) [80-85], give examples of verbal and/or nonverbal messages that you have personally
observed. Explain how both denotative and connotative meanings [102-03] were conveyed
verbally and nonverbally.
E) Keeping well within expectations of propriety, evaluate your experience and level of success
in computer-mediated communication as far as both creating and maintaining relationships. How
has the advance of technology affected your interpersonal relationships or changed the way you
communicate with others?
F) Discuss either your friendships, love relationships, or family relationships (choose one of
these three relationship types) by identifying their type or types (and characteristics, if helpful)
and by noting any influence of culture, gender, and/or technology (if applicable). If you choose
to discuss multiple relationships within the chosen category, you might discuss one in detail and
summarize the rest, noting interesting comparisons/contrasts [217-27].
G) Describe a conflict you had with another person that ended in a positive outcome, giving
specific examples of how the conflict followed the five steps of conflict management to its
successful conclusion (define the conflict, examine possible solutions, test the solution, evaluate
the solution, accept or reject the solution) [Ch. 11].
H) Analyze and evaluate your own non-verbal communication processes. In what situations do
you (by propriety or choice) communicate more non-verbally than verbally? How effective are
these non-verbal communications in achieving your goals? [Ch. 6].
