This part of Project 3 asks you to make some initial decisions about what genre you want to work in for this project. Writing the proposal will help you think about what direction you want to take your project. It will also provide an opportunity to assess your thinking, and confirm your focus to ensure a productive final essay. In class you might work with peers and instructor to get feedback on your proposed direction.
Provide as much detail as you can about the project here. It’s all right if you don’t know exactly what you want to do because this assignment will help us narrow down your options. You can also change your idea as the project progresses (and you will not have to resubmit this assignment) – sometimes a proposal is just as valuable for illustrating what you don’t want to do, but you don’t know that until you actually try to propose it.
What discourse community will you be working with? If this is a different discourse community than the one you focused on in Project Two, explain that community and why you are making the change.
What genre do you want to write in for this discourse community? You can pick any genre, but please be as specific as you can. Some examples might be:
a forum post asking a question
a tweet thread narrating a live event
a set of memes that make at least partial use of text, and include a written description
a resource with useful information (a guide on WikiHow, a response to a question on any platform)
a mock-up of web site content (you don’t have to create an actual web site)
an article for a newsletter or e-newsletter or other publication for this community
a parody of some recognizable aspect of writing in the community
any other genre this community participates in or values
You may propose several different ideas here, and you will get feedback to help you choose the one that will be the best fit for this project.
Have you ever written anything like this before? If not, are there any new skills you’ll need to learn for this project? Your instructor may be able to help.
Provide links to 3 examples of similar pieces of writing by members of the discourse community. It’s all right if these are not exactly like the sample you want to write. Just choose these links to illustrate how this kind of communication/creation works in your chosen community. If there is nothing like this in your community already, explain why you feel this is something the community will want or need.
