Once you’ve chosen the editorial you want to analyze, carefully
read the editorial twice. The first time you read it, just try to get a general
feel for the author’s purpose, tone, and the content of the editorial. Then
read it a second time, paying attention to the details. Then answer the
following questions in complete sentences, explaining your answers with
examples from the editorial.
Part 2 Editorial Assignment Questions
1. What issue is this editorial commenting on?
2. Who is the author(s) of this editorial? What kind of
experience, knowledge, or expertise do they have that gives them authority to
comment on this issue?
3. In the editorial, what is the “Bottom Line”, or main
argument? Where in the editorial does the author make their position clear?
4. What kind of editorial is it? Does it express a
straightforward opinion or does it provide solutions?
5. How does the author use facts and research to support their
opinion? Is it clear where the facts came from? What kind of examples and
anecdotes are used by the author to clearly explain their idea?
6. Give examples of potential reader questions, concerns, or
objections that the author tries to address in the editorial.
7. In your opinion, what are the strengths of this editorial?
