What is an issue? “An important topic or problem for debate or discussion”. For
us, it is one of the six most important aspects we have learnt in class.
Is Confucianism and issue? Yes! Is Buddhism an issue? Yes!
But of course, you cannot discuss the whole Confucian doctrine or Buddhist ideas in
the paper, so you need to choose.

An “issue” according to most dictionaries is an important topic for debate or discussion. In our class, we have touched upon a number of important topics that are crucial to Chinas economic, political or cultural development. You should be able to discuss six important issues. These could be people, ideas, works of engineering, economic development and so forth.

Because you have very limited space: one Issue 250-300 words (keep it to 300 words. I do not mind a tiny bit more, but I do not want 400 words. Synthesis is of utmost importance). Six issues 1800 words more or less.

Finally, some examples: A dynasty is NOT an issue, it is way too broad. Buddhism could be an issue for the fundamental changes it wrought in society, but you cannot address it in its totality, since it is too broad a topic. The ideal ruler is an issue, but you will have to think about the ideal ruler. For example, the ideal ruler as exemplified in the Han dynasty is not simply a Confucian ruler, far from it, it is more than that and you will need to think about it.
