“The Bear” by Anton Chekhov
What does the stable represent as a setting? What is associated with the stable in this play?
As Wang (p.3) explains, realism involves attempts by an author to depict environments, people, and objects as they exist and see in everyday life. Chekhov, even with the comic, one-act play that is “The Bear” still depicts realism vividly, in effect showing various details of everyday life amongst the common folk. In this scene, in the drawing-room of Popova’s house, Smirnov emerges to find Popova mourning her recently deceased husband (Chekhov). The play soon reveals that Popova’s husband owed Smirnov some money and that his intention in visiting the home was to collect upon the debt. As the drama continues to escalate, the play sees Popova ask Smirnov not to shout, as this was not stable. In this way, the play through Popova depicts stables as a rowdy place where every unruly behavior such as shouting would be permissible. In her very next line. Popova smirks at Smirnov, telling him that he does not know how to behave before women. In this statement, her understanding of a stable is further refined and amplified as where every unruly, rowdy behavior can be allowed to pass.
