1. The ancient stoic view of death claims that death is not something to be concerned about. Explain that view and explain any of the reasons that I argued that such a view seems mistaken.
2. What is socioeconomic inequality? Why is it so difficult to eradicate? What measures are typically used to address it? And why does it matter that we do something about it?
3. What is compatibilism and explain any two compatibilist responses to the challenge posed by determinism.
4. I introduced the The Myth of Sisyphus. What is the myth and explain how the view services the view about the meaning of life that I presented.
5. Charles Mills claim that the notion of subpersonhood captures the tensions and internal contradictions of the black experience in a white supremacist society. Explain what he means and how this happens.
6. Glen Coulthard argues that the recognition frame of Indian relations in Canada favors the government over Indigenous nations. What is his worry and is there a way to make the relations between Canada and Indigenous peoples equal?
Long Answer Section
Answer one question (80 points). Do not write more than three pages, double spaced.
1. Black Lives Matter (BLM: https://blacklivesmatter.com/about/) is a movement dedicated to a number of social justice issues. In what ways does the movement reflect Mills’ understanding of the necessity and importance of Black Philosophy. So be sure to:
a. Explain Mills’ criticism of western philosophy
b. Explain the ways the notion of black lives matter, is continuous with or reflects some of the issues in black philosophy
2. John Rawls offers a theory of justice that, he claims, lies within the social contract tradition. And it seeks to offer a theory of justice that locates justice in institutional design rather than in character (for instance, as Plato does in the Republic).
a. Explain the reasoning that Rawls provides to support his contention that the two principles of justice are the correct principles to organize institutions.
b. Critically consider Rawls’ principles. What worries do they generate and is there a way for Rawls to respond to them? (note: you should explain no more than two objections)
