Choose two of the four prompts below to respond to in your midterm exam. In your response, clearly indicate which prompts you are responding to. Your responses should be a combined length of 3-5 pages. You are encouraged to argue in your own voice and to express your own views, but you must always offer support for your claims and arguments. Be sure to include a bibliography at the end of your paper, and your citations should be consistent with a common format of your choosing (Chicago Style, MLA, APA). This exam is due Tuesday 3/22 by the end of the day (11:59 PM). You should submit your exam on Blackboard at the Assignments tab. Please submit your exam as a DOCX or PDF file. Questions (choose two): 1. What is globalization? When did it begin? How has it changed over time? (E.g., how was the Bretton Woods regime different than what came afterward?) Why has there been resistance to globalization? 2. What is the “Washington Consensus”? What kinds of policies did it recommend? How did the Washington Consensus spread to developing countries (such as in Latin America)? What were the results? 3. Briefly explain why the Keynesian welfare state experienced a crisis in the 1970s. Define neoliberalism and discuss the neoliberal regime that emerged in the 1980s. How did neoliberal policies contribute to the rise of inequality and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis? 4. The US has undertaken various military and economic interventions in foreign countries in the post-Vietnam War period. Discuss at least two examples of US intervention and explain how/whether these interventions have been imperialist. (You may discuss interventions other than those covered in course material but be sure to use reliable sources for support.) Your exam will be evaluated according to three basic criteria: (a) effective engagement with and use of appropriate sources for support; (b) the clarity of your argument and a complete response to each part of the prompt; (c) and the clarity of your writing and proper use of terms and concepts related to the course. See the rubric on the next page for more details. PROMPT POSTED IN FILES AS WELL AS THE SOURCES NEEDED TO USE. BIBLIOGRAPHY MUST BE INCLUDED, EXCLUDED FROM PAGE COUNT.
