Consider the following: What, Who, When, Where, How?
What action or change will occur?
Who will carry it out?
When will the project take place and for how long?
Where are resources needed?
How will you communicate the project?
Examples of this type of service are conducting food drives, participating in adopt-a-highway programs, tutoring, volunteering at a local shelter, teaching younger children, or helping elderly neighbors.
Step 1: What is needed in your community or a community of your choice as a group?
Once you have an idea of the issues present in your area, spend some time researching them. What is the history of the issue? Is it a new thing or has it been around a long time? What realistic steps can be taken to address it? What, if anything, has been done in the past to fix the issue?
Step 2: Choose a service project.
If your group brainstorms several possible ideas, rank the ideas from most to least important. Vote on or decide which issue you want to focus on for this activity. Although eliminating world hunger is a great initiative, that type of project may not be reasonable or realistic as a group.
You may even consider something such as building a home for a deserving family in a community; however, would it be more efficient and beneficial for the family if you simply raised the money for the home rather than build the home? Think of ideas that can be tackled in a small way yet would make a small difference. As an example, I gathered hats for cancer patients and delivered to a local cancer center for those individuals that lost their hair during chemotherapy treatments in the winter months.
Step 3: What are the issues or problems you can identify about this project?
Research your project to provide background information and build the need for the service project. Be sure to use credible resources and cite those resources in APA format.
Step 4: Develop a plan.
Write down exactly what you are hoping to accomplish including goals and objectives. This will include a big-picture goal as well as the specific smaller tasks that you will need to do in order to get to that main goal (objectives).
You also need to go into the practicalities of the project. Specifically, what would be needed to accomplish your plan? How many people will you need to successfully complete each part of the project? How much time can each person commit to the project? How will you organize different volunteers if needed? Are there any liabilities or potential complications that can arise from the project you’re planning?
Step 5: Identify a budget and timeline
Make sure you list the type of items that you need and be specific! How many will you need of each item? What is the cost per item? What is the total cost? Consider practical needs as well such as transportation or materials needed for your proposed project. Would you need to raise money or gather donations? Would you need publicity to advertise your project? If so, how would you advertise and where? Mark specific goals on your anticipated timeline.
