What is or are your biggest take-away(s) from Revelation, and from this class, and why?
What type of revelation do you think John had, and why do you think that? Was it his imagination, a day dream, a dream he had at night while sleeping, a trance, etc.? Did his soul actually separate from his body to visit God as God showed him this in person? Did God come in person to show John this revelation? Did this take place in another dimmension, so to speak? Did John’s soul remain with his body while his body and soul were taken to God’s physical presence in person? Was is something else or another way?
Why do you think John, and only John, was chosen to have this revelation? Or was John’s revelation just the only one chosen to be in the Bible? Is it possible that there have been other legitimate revelations from God of this magnitude or type? Why or why not?
Please explain your answers in at least two paragraphs, or at least 8 sentences total.
For centuries Christians have argued over the interpretation of the Book of Revelation. Some take the book historically but differ as to how to interpret the book historically. The Preterists say the book referred only to John’s generation and has little meaning for us. The Continuous-Historical folks state the book is a detailed forecast of history and we can find where we are in the book and how close we are to the end. The Futurists believe the book refers to the end of human history and is only helpful to the last generation of history.
Most Christians also recognize the importance of symbolism in the book. There are a number symbols (7, 666), animal symbols (dragon, beast), and other symbols, but few can agree on exactly what these symbols mean.
A few scholars have even viewed this as a play designed to be performed on the stage at Ephesus. The book is really a screenplay!
