The Special Projects Assignments (SPAs) and the Pop Up Assignments (PUAs) are analyses of the theories that you are learning throughout the semester. They are also in-depth responses to various videos, TED Talks, newspaper and magazine articles, and other forms of media about historical and current events that critically relate to sociology and critically relate to the ideas we will be learning about.

Each written assignment MUST be
5-7 pages long for the Reflections Assignments
3-5 pages long for the Special Projects Assignments and Pop Up Assignments
The works cited page is not included in the page count
Each written assignment must include:
A summary of any chapter/article/video (35 words or more with a separate word count)
Answers to any and all questions embedded in the Special Projects Assignments and Pop Up Assignments (35 words or more with a separate word count)
Three or more quotations with in-text citations from three or more separate sources
Citations must appear in the Works Cited Page
A discussion/analysis of the chapter/article/video showing me that you (35 words or more with a separate word count)
Care about what you are supposed to be learning
Are using outside sources
Are analyzing deeply what you read and/or watched
Are relating your analysis to the topics in the chapter/article/video
A discussion of “what I learned” (35 words or more with a separate word count)
A discussion of “how to apply what I learned” (35 words or more with a separate word count)
A discussion of a perspective and how it fits the topic in the chapter/article/video (35 words or more with a separate word count)
The perspectives include:
Conflict—(which includes Marxist Theory, Feminist Theory, Queer Theory)
Structural-Functionalism
Symbolic Interactionism
Mid-Range Theory
Postmodernism
You must have a separate word count for each portion of the assignment
You must have a works cited page with three or more separate sources that is not part of the page count or word count
Doing only the minimum will earn you a grade of 70% or less, I expect more from you!

Leaving out any of the elements listed in this document will receive a reduction of 10-points or more
Lack of deep analysis will receive a reduction of 10-points or more
Lack of substance will receive a reduction of 10-points or more
Poor writing or poor formatting will receive a reduction of 10-points or more
Lack of word count will receive a reduction of 10-points or more
Lack of three or more short quotations with in-text citations will receive a reduction of 10-points or more
Lack of Works Cited Page will receive a reduction of 10-points or more
If necessary, and if I ask you to rewrite and resubmit any assignment, I will adjust your grade once you have submitted a correct assignment
If you are asked more than once to rewrite and resubmit the same assignment, I will take deductions for lateness and for not following the rules

Immigrants have been coming to America for 15 thousand years since various ethnic groups from Asia crossed a land bridge over the Aleutian Archipelago and the Bering Strait which were frozen sold during the last ice age. As far as we know, these “immigrants”— our First People—came and populated this continent long before any white people came. It was around 1,000 AD that Vikings from Iceland and/or Greenland sailed to the area around Nova Scotia and stayed there for about 200 years. They eventually lost all hope of being able to prosper here, so they abandoned their small subsistence farms and went back to their ancestral home of Iceland/Greenland.
Since the European “founding” of the Americas, most native people were slaughtered and much of their historical treasure has been lost. It has been estimated that 90% of our First People were killed in a genocide that lasted for 200 years.
We are now a nation of immigrants, but the Trump administration seems to believe that immigrants—mostly those with brown or black bodies—are dangerous and should either not receive a visa to study here or if they are already here they should go back to their homeland if our colleges and universities go online-only for the immediate future (Fall 2020 and perhaps Spring 2021). Most of our students at HCC who are international students—we have the largest contingent of international students than any other college in the country!—have brown or black bodies. I have known many of you over the years and have learned so much that I am very proud to have met you!

Acting Director of Homeland Security Ken Cuccinelli has said that it is a good thing for our country and our colleges and universities if we are forced to open our schools to have face-to-face classes. (Links to an external site.) In terms of how many people this effects, not counting counselors, lawyers, teachers, staff, etc. we are looking at over one million international students! Imagine. In the early days of a pandemic, we are going to make these people go back to the country where they were born! This is a long (20 minutes) argument between Brianna Keilar and Mr. Cuccinelli.
