To complete this assignment, students are expected to assess the aspects of a trauma informed and human rights perspective(s) within a selected organization, such as a
human service agency, school, hospital, etc. Students are encouraged to assess their
current field placement or organization where they work. (I work for SASI)
The purpose of this assignment is to explore and describe the extent to which the
activities of an agency or program are consistent with five guiding values/principles of
trauma-informed practice: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and
empowerment, as well as utilize a human rights perspective.
This assignment includes
two parts:
PART 1: PROGRAM ASSESSMENT
The focus of the first part of your paper will be a written assessment of your perspective
on how the trauma-informed and human rights perspective is operationalized within the
agency. The program assessment will include:
Introduction: Describe the agency or program that you have assessed, the
client/patient/student population that is served and the nature of social work practice in
this setting. Using professional literature, describe the nature of the issues faced by the
target population of individuals who utilize services from the type of agency or program
you are assessing. Pay particular attention to the interrelationship between trauma and
human rights in this population.
5 Guiding Values/Principles of Trauma-Informed Practice: Using Harris and Fallot’s
Creating Cultures of Trauma- Informed Care and one additional organizational
assessment tool of your choice, discuss to what extent the agency or program ensures the following for both

assessment findings. Please consider both a focus on client/patient/student AND
staff/workforce levels when include the following:
• What is the agency/program already doing well with regard to implementing a
trauma-informed and human rights (TI-HR) approach?
• What are the challenges faced by this agency/program in responding to the target
population in a way that utilizes a. TI-HR approach? What do you see as the
reason for these challenges (be sure to utilize a what happened versus what’s
wrong lens here)?
• What recommendations would you make to strengthen its TI-HR approach? What
are some small next steps they could consider? What resources would be needed?
• Who would you approach in the agency/program, and how would you frame your
recommendations
