This assignment requires students to prepare an “administrative summary” of where is their higher education institution currently regarding DEI and how it got there. Sections to include:
Development over time
o When did this work begin? How has it changed over time?
o What is the current practice(s) of the institution towards DEI? Is there an office, CDO, strategic plan, etc?
Moments of conflict/crisis
o Have there been any moments where the commitment to DEI at the institution has been challenged?
o How has the institution responded to the calls for change since 2020?
Current practices
o Take some time to review the document “A Checklist for Sustaining Institution-Wide Racial Equity” posted to the course shell.
o How do the current practices reflect the areas of priority, language, data, and inquiry?
o Consider the practices against the literature we have read in class thus far. Is there alignment or disagreement?
Priorities/funding efforts
o What does the institution say if prioritizes?
o What funded positions and programs are operated by the institution?
o Is there a disconnect? What, if anything, is missing?
PAPER EXPECTATIONS:
The final paper must meet the following standards:
• Be between 4-6 pages (excluding title page and bibliography)
o The page length is subjective it only matters if length on board if the paper is clearly too short or gets too long-winded for the topic.
• Follow APA 7th Edition conventions in paper formatting (font, structure, subheadings) and referencing (internal citations, bibliography)
• Include the following sources cited within the paper:
o At least 5 relevant, substantive quotes (from the Smith text)
o Substantive, relevant connections/quotes to at least 3 other course texts
o Link(s) to any relevant websites or documents regarding work around DEI from the institution you are choosing to analyze
o If they exist, relevant documents/articles regarding any moments of conflict/crisis in your institution’s history
