My ecology concept is “What is the effect of succession plot age on plant height?”
Data – When we measured the tree in succession plot D, it was 7.52 ft. The tree
in succession plot A was 12.8 ft.
▪
Basic
information on your ecosystem of study including your specific species if
relevant that relate to the experiment
you designed (example: if you design an experiment to determine whether
there are more phosphates in the Winthrop Lake in areas of dense vegetation in
the lake versus areas where there is no vegetation in the lake use your research to justify your working
hypothesis so you think there will be a smaller number of phosphates in areas
of dense vegetation since plants use phosphorus to live).
▪
Basic
description of your area of study – if someone wanted to repeat your experiment
they need enough details about where you were in order to repeat the
experiment. Be sure to state the day and time and the weather conditions during
your experiment.
▪
Be
sure to include your null hypothesis and your working hypothesis written out in
this section and use your research to
support your working hypothesis.
o
Materials and Methods:
▪
Explain
how you conducted your experiment so
that it could be replicated exactly by me or someone else.
▪
Include
all of the materials you used in your experiment such as lab quest with
dissolved oxygen probe,
▪
Make
sure you mention what your controlled variables are
▪
State
here what statistical test you used to analyze your data and why
▪
Make
sure your sample size is appropriate – at least 5 samples taken per group
o
Results:
▪
Share
the results of your experiment here and the statistical test you used
▪
Give
the data here but do not discuss why (that is for the discussion
section)
▪
Put
your data in a chart and graph (be
sure to label the axes and give it a title). Each chart and graph should be
labeled as Figure 1: TITLE, Figure 2: TITLE, etc.
▪
In
a paragraph below your charts and graphs you should summarize what you have
shown in chart and graph form
▪
Make
sure you show how you got your calculated value and critical
values and show me the comparison of those two numbers and state whether you accept or reject your null hypothesis
o
Discussion/Conclusion:
▪
Discuss
the meaning of your results and how it relates to your working hypothesis; why do you think you got the results you
got – use research to support this!
▪
You
must use and cite your sources here to support your discussion of the results
▪
Describe
any problems you encountered or sources of experimental error
▪
State
what you would do in the future if you could repeat this experiment or design a
new one to gain a better understanding of animal behavior in your chosen
organism
o
A
References cited section listing all
of the sources you used for your report (you should use Council of Science
Editors name-year (CSE) style for
your sources) https://library.bu.edu/csestyle
