1) You won’t read about this in the book but there is a special problem surrounding speech classes and it is the problem of exigency. The word exigency is defined as the reason you get up to speak. What is the exigency for giving a wedding toast? Answer: to commemorate the bride and groom. What is the exigency for a eulogy? Answer: to commemorate the life of the deceased and give comfort to those in the audience. But what is the exigency for giving speeches for this class? A grade! Honestly, that isn’t a very great exigency because your focus is not on the topic–it is on the grade you might be getting!
In most real life situations you will be given an exigency. But for class, you will be picking a topic yourself. To overcome the challenge of exigency, this you will need to do something very important. I want you to bring your own exigency. What do you think bringing your own exigency means? What are some things that you would like to speak about that would fit the various assignments that would help you bring your own exigency? As you select a topic what do you need to consider?
2) What are the 3 general purposes? What is a specific purpose & how is it used?
3) You will be using a thesis with main points for every single speech. Write down a random topic. Then write a thesis for it with main points. Example: Smurfs. Thesis: The TV show “Smurfs” was one of the best cartoons with great characters, an interesting creator, and a fascinating back story.
