Claim a NY County
For the first three modules you will be looking at snow and rainfall data for counties in New York state. For the Module 1 Assignment with Discussion, select one county in New York that has not already been claimed by a classmate – it does not have to be the county you live in, but it must be a different county than anyone else has claimed. Create a main post where you claim that county no other student has claimed – include the county in the title/subject and in the body of your main post. Then, at a later time, you will respond to your main post with your work (responses to the questions posed will be in that response, and the Excel file containing your work/commands/results will be attached to that response).
You will not receive credit if you post/select a county that has already been claimed by a classmate.
Get Data
Begin by obtaining data from the NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center. Links will open in a new window.
Visit the NOAA National Climatic Data Online Search page at http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/search.
Select the “daily summaries” weather observation type/dataset.
Select the date range January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2020. There are drop down menus to select the year and month. To select the day click on that day on the calendar found below the year and month.
Select the “Search for” criteria “counties”.
Enter the county you have claimed for the “Enter a Search Term” option.
Click the blue Search button.
A map will come up showing the county. On the left side of this page click the orange Add to Cart button.
On the upper right side of this page click on the orange Cart (Free Data) button.
Select the output format as the Custom GHCN-Daily CSV file type.
Click the orange Continue button on the bottom of this page.
Under “Select data types for custom output”, click the “+” to expand the Precipitation option. Select PRCP and SNOW.
Click the orange Continue button on the bottom of the page.
Enter your email address (twice) on this page.
Click on the orange Submit Order button.
You will receive an email in the near future to access and download the requested data.
Watch for this email (and check your spam folders). Once you get the email, save the data to your own computer in an Excel file format (.xls or .xlsx). You may have to use the Save As feature to do this. Make sure to save this Excel file somewhere you can find it again. You will be working with this data set for Modules 1-3. The file name should be the county you have selected.

Time to check out the Excel file and the data that is in it!
The first tab contains the raw data. If you see “###” symbols in a cell in a column, widen that column so that you can view the content of the cells in that column. Give a descriptive name to this first tab, namely, the county you have selected. Any and all work you do for Modules 1-3 will be in other tabs. Do not do any work in this first tab that contains the raw data. Click on the plus symbol that is to the right of the first tab to create a new worksheet. Give this new tab a descriptive name, namely “Mod 1”.
You are not to do any work by hand, rather let Excel do the work. Here are examples of commands you will be using in this assignment.
To get a list of the names of the weather stations in the second column of the raw data, use Excel’s UNIQUE command, where the command should be in the Mode 1 tab and is referencing the raw data tab (Saratoga County, in this example).
=UNIQUE(‘Saratoga County’!B:B)
To find the largest value in the fourth column of the raw data, use Excel’s MAX command, where the command should be in the Mod 1 tab and is referencing the raw data tab (Saratoga County, in this example).
=MAX(‘Saratoga County’!D:D)
To count the number of values larger than a specified value (1.5 in this case) in the fourth column of the raw data, use Excel’s COUNTIF command, where the command line should be in the Mod 1 tab and is referencing the raw data tab (Saratoga County, in this example).
=COUNTIF(‘Saratoga County’!D:D,”>1.5″)
The Discussion Assignment
Create a single post (which will be a response to the main post where you claimed your county) addressing each of the questions below, using complete and descriptive sentences. Attach your Excel data file (*.xls or *.xlsx) to your discussion post. The Excel file will include not only the data, but also the use of commands (such as MAX and COUNTIF) and clearly labeled results/cells/tabs.
How many weather stations are in your county? How many pieces of data are in your file (how many lines of data, not counting the header/titles on the first row)? Look at the start and end dates of the data for some of the weather stations. Do they include data for the full time period you requested? If not, are only a couple days missing or are entire years worth of data missing? Why might data be missing?
Look at the PRCP and SNOW columns. What are the units for PRCP and for SNOW? Find the largest PRCP and largest SNOW values in your data set. Visit the top of page 5 in the GHCND Documentation page, which explains what the data in these columns is representing (note, the data you collected is of the Daily Form). What does a data entry of 9999 mean?
