What is the purpose of the Court of Arbitration for Sport?

Deco was a Brazilian soccer player. After sub- mitting to a drug test conducted by a company in Brazil, LADETEC, samples of a banned sub- stance were indicated. As a result, Deco was suspended for a year by the Brazilian Soccer Federation. However, Deco argued that because the company, LADETEC, was not accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) at the time of the test. Deco asked for a re-test of his sample by a WADA-accredited lab in Lausanne, Switzerland.
After submitting to a re-test, the results indicated that Deco had not used any banned
substances. Consequently, Deco and the Brazil- ian Soccer Federation entered into an agreement to dismiss the suspension. Additionally, Deco and the Brazilian Soccer Federation asserted themselves to be reciprocally settled. The con- cern was whether Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS) would support this settlement and release a Consent Award echoed the terms of the agree- ment between the two parties. The CAS ratified and incorporated the settlement agreement into a Consent Award, which reflected the terms of the parties settlement. As a result, both parties con- cluded their debate on this matter.
