I frequently get asked about “model” essays, and do not generally provide them. To explain why; what students usually want, when they ask for a “model” answer, is an example of a 1st-standard answer. The problem is that there’s no single thing a 1st-standard answer looks like. Good 2.1s all look much the same; they do everything we ask for, answer the question, explain the issues clearly, and argue persuasively for a particular critical view of the issues discussed. But 1sts all look different; they don’t just tick the boxes, but do something extra, or something especially well. That extra thing will be entirely different from essay to essay, and very rarely is something that can be accomplished just by imitation. So I’ll try to brief you all in detail, well in advance of essay submission deadlines, about what I’m looking for; but what I’m looking for is best communicated by explanation, and not by ostensive examples.
