The Visual Rhetorical Analysis assignment asks you to analyze the features of a visual object in order to discover a deeper meaning. Just like a written text, a visual “text” communicates meaning on a deeper level beyond merely the literal. Your essay will illuminate this meaning thereby helping your audience understand your interpretation of the image.
You will choose one of the following flags to analyze, so please look up images of each in order to make your selection and begin your research:
– the flag of the County of Dallas
While viewing this flag, you should consider these questions to get you started on research and ideas:
What is being “advertised” by the visual object?
What associations is the visual object meant to convey?
Who seems to be the targeted audience?
What is the visual object’s primary strategy for conveying its message?
Does the visual object use specific rhetorical strategies?
How does the visual object use language-based text (even subtly)?
What is the visual object’s overall visual impression?
Choose an approach and be selective: you cannot cover all of these elements in a single paper.
You must have a thesis (an interpretation) about the visual object being analyzed and elements of its visual rhetoric.
AUDIENCE: Imagine you are writing this essay as a way of introducing the text to a high-school class who is completely unfamiliar with the flag you choose and has no access to actually seeing it before reading your paper.
The essay should include a Work or Works Cited page.the presenting your paper, and use the Essay Template for further insight if neededneeded
