Week 4 Assignment Notes
Topic Sentence: In recent times, it can often be said that many people are willing to take on the role of an early childhood teacher for the money.
Thesis: Increasingly common, early childhood care plays an important role in children’s development and provides a valuable support to families with young children. It is therefore important to understand the impact of these services and to ensure their quality and accessibility. Although appearances may suggest that this is the case, that pursuit of money overrides their love for children, there are some centers that truly love what they do. As I started my journey in Childcare I must admit I felt a little nervous. I had been out of work for over a year. Working in Childcare, you have to have a sense of humor. As a childcare provider, we try to give individual attention to each child, but at times it is almost impossible. There are children that require more attention than others, and sometimes it feels as though you have to clone yourself in order to attend to each child. Childcare providers are not only faced with educational challenges. They are faced with emotional, physical, and personal circumstances. In spite of these challenges, I try to never let them become a barrier between me and my love of teaching. The truth is that there is a strong bond between each child and their teacher, one that is not so easily broken. Making each child feel welcome is important however, adding a safe learning environment is just as important
Career Goals: As for career goals, I plan to use the Associates Degree I have obtained and the bachelor’s degree I am working towards to help me become a better person. I had hoped to one day open my own childcare or go into business with someone that has the same dreams as I do. Unfortunately, I do not envision that happening.
Opportunity: Everyone wants to feel they are worth something. Offering some the opportunity to “do more” may give them the push they need to succeed. There are not many that would have this choice. I have seen cases where children are left in the house to fend for themselves while their parents worked. I was one of those cases. My biological mom locked me in the house until she returned from work; or in the garage or closet so others would not see me.
Personal Experience: When I had my first child, I was told by another young lady that “children are not just for dressing up and making look pretty”. This statement threw me for a loop. I believed I knew exactly what I was doing based on what I saw and was told. My daughter at that time needed more than just pretty clothing, she needed her mother to grow up and realize that she (child) was real. She was not a doll. Children do not come with instructions therefore; they need parents that will understand their every feeling and thought. Having an intimate relationship with our children may make it easier for them to talk. Children have enough to deal with without having an intimate relationship with their parents. I know this from experience. I was able to talk to my mom about anything when I was younger. It certainly made a life a little easier to understand and handle.
Interpersonal Skills: Although some may find this difficult, I believe these are “skills” that parents must learn for themselves. it was a training I received through life experiences. In my perspective, how would someone know what advice to give or if they had never received some type of training. Then again, “life training” is also “on the job training.” As children things are seen as difficult; as parents we see things as necessary evils. There are things that must be done in the name of survival. As a child my childhood was very difficult.
Importance of Neighborhood: A Childcare Center should be centered in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by homes and local public schools. Making each child feel welcome is important however, adding a safe learning environment is just as important.
Child abuse and neglect seems to be a prevalent topic now more than ever.
Well balanced meals
Parental Satisfaction: Though we know that not everyone will be pleased. Trying our best to satisfy all of the parents that enroll their children in childcare is and will always be an endeavor. For the most part, parents have been pleased with the educational experiences their children are receiving.
Parental Connection: I would say that the connection we have with our parents is fantastic.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of centers that do not provide services for special needs children at this time. The center does, however, take care of many Multicultural children. Fortunately, in order to accommodate Multicultural children, there has to be educational material and their language. Parents of all cultures should be encouraged to participate in their child’s experience through storytelling, reading, helping with bulletin boards, and chaperoning field trips. parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older siblings are all encouraged to visit their child at the center anytime they choose. at the center where I work there is an open-door policy.
Children Are Special Gifts: In my eyes each child is special; so special that I am willing to go above and beyond for them. Recently, a child experienced a death in the family. The staff members got together and provided both lunch and dinner for the family. In another case, a child lost everything, except for one toy in a fire. The center is now collecting items for that child. These are just a few examples of how the center exuberates quality childcare. We do these things not because we have to but because we want to. We empathize with the children that attend our facility and their families, knowing that any of these things could happen to us.
