Leon Higginbotham’s work on the American Revolution raises the question of whether the Declaration of Independence was a self-evident truth or a lie. Like the Virginia Slave Codes, and the Louisiana Code Noir, the US Constitution was pro-slavery.
In each of the three, consider the language used to upholding slavery. For instance, “we desire” “Englishmen” “Christian” “negro” or the language of violence or “fugitives.”
