Cultural competency begins with the nurse/individual better understanding his/her beliefs, attitudes, and values and how this might impact the care you provide for others from different cultural groups. In this journal entry, I want you to complete the socio-cultural self-assessment by considering the following questions.
In your Reflection Journal entry briefly address each of the bold print questions. The remaining questions are for your own personal reflection. **5-Have I ever experienced the feeling of being rejected by another group? Did this experience heighten my sensitivity to other cultures or cause me to criticize others?
6-When I was growing up, what messages did I get from parents and friends about people from groups different from mine? Do those attitudes cause me difficulty today?
**7-What are major stereotypes I hold about people from different groups? Do these biases help or hinder me in developing cultural sensitivity?
**8-To work effectively with people from different cultural groups, what do I need to change about myself?
